Orien
Speak with your eyes
Getting started with Orien
A free iPhone app that lets someone talk using only their eyes. A setup guide for families and caregivers.
What you need
- An iPhone with Face ID and iOS 17 or later (iPhone XR, XS or newer). iPhone SE won't work, and iPad isn't supported yet.
- A mount or stand that holds the phone steady.
- Good light on the face.
- A charger nearby. The screen stays on while Orien is open.
How to talk with Orien
- Look up, down, left or right to highlight a choice.
- Hold your gaze until the bar fills, or blink on purpose with both eyes.
- Look down to go back. On the first page, down opens People.
- Look right at Next Page for more choices.
Set it up
- Install Orien. Scan the code above, or search Orien Speak with Eyes in the App Store. It's free, with no account.
- Mount the phone in front of the face, at eye level, about as far away as for a FaceTime call.
- Open Orien and tap Allow for the camera. Contacts and Photos are optional.
- Follow the short tour. When OK appears, look at it or tap it, then enter a name. Tapping the keys is fine.
- Try it. Look up to open E‑Talk, then choose "I'm in pain."
Too slow or too fast? Look right twice to reach the third page, look left for Settings, then choose Speed.
For caregivers
- You can tap anything on the screen. A tapped phrase is spoken right away.
- If "Face not detected" appears, center the face in front of the phone, add light, and make sure nothing covers the top of the phone.
- No sound? Turn the volume up and make sure silent mode is off.
- Texts open in Messages and need a tap to send.
Orien is not for emergencies. In an emergency, call 911.
